E-Communications Household Survey, Fieldwork December 2005 – January 2006, Publication July 2006

Mobile telephony
Mobile phone penetration rate is 80% among EU25 households. This means that the mobile telephony penetration rate is slightly higher than that for fixed telephony (including ISDN) at 78%.
The bigger the city size, the higher the penetration rate of mobile telephony. This is certainly the case in the New Member States but to a lesser extent in the old EU15.
Age is an influencing factor regarding the personal possession of a mobile; the older the respondent the more likely they are not to have a mobile. At the EU 25 level, also more men than women (83% versus 76%) responded that they have a personal mobile phone.

Mobile only
At European level, 18% of households stated they had access to one or several mobile phones but no fixed telephone access. The penetration rate of ‘mobile only’ is somewhat higher among single households in the old EU15.
The average proportion of single households with only a mobile phone (i.e. no fixed line) climbs to 58% for the 15-29 years age group and falls down to 6% only for persons aged 60 years old and over.
