27/2  The mobile: Young and dangerous and soon superseding the internet

Category: Miscellaneous    By editor at 13:45
Great post from Tomi: Mobile the 7th Mass Media is to internet like TV is to radio
So the mobile is an "inherent threat" mass media, capable of cannibalizing any of its predecessors.

But mobile adds five elements not possible on the previous six mass media, making the mobile the inherently superior mass media.
  1. The mobile is personal.
  2. The mobile is the first always-on mass media.
  3. The mobile is the first always-carried mass media.
  4. The mobile is the first mass media with a built-in payment mechanism.
  5. Mobile uniquely offers the media audience the input tool, at the point of creative impulse.

So yes the mobile, as the 7th Mass Media is the youngest, least understood, most dangerous new mass media - one which will soon supercede the internet. Not because consuming a web page is better on a phone (that would be stupid to even try) but rather has five benefits the internet cannot hope to match.

22/2  Open Applications Leverage Open Standards

Mobile 2.0
Open Applications Leverage Open Standards

Lastly, it is important to note that mobile 2.0 applications need to leverage open standards. Applications that sit on top of closed and proprietary protocols and formats are antithetical to the kind of innovation that will be key to the growth of the mobile Web. Establishing open standards around HTML, CSS and XML has greatly contributed to the growth and success of the medium and to its continued innovation. We are already seeing standards pay off big-time on the mobile platform as well in both the Java/JCP space (where we are finally realizing write-once-run-anywhere) and in the mobile Web.
Yeah!

19/1  Spinvox blogs speech to text

Category: Miscellaneous    By editor at 00:00
In June last year, we tried out Spinvox with this blog or rather they tried it out as it was then a UK product only. It was great, but it was not possible to use it at that time for our french or german-speaking clients. Now, for there US Launch they use a Liveblog to do something similar.

With QR Codes, Feed2Mobile and SMS Alerts this could even get more interesting. Let's look if we can meet at 3GSM.

18/1  Mobile Design Books

Functioning Form aka Luke Wroblewski did a nice summary about some recent Mobile Design Books.

And in this article from Luke, I found an interesting quote from Don Norman:
“With time, the technology matures, offering better performance and higher reliability. When the technology exceeds the basic needs of most of its customers, there is a major change in customer behavior. Emotional reaction, pride of ownership, and pleasurability all can become major selling points.”
I guess the time of technology exceeding the basic needs of most of it's customers is exactly what we are experiencing at present with telephony 1.0 (calls and SMS). Think RAZR, the LG chocolate and now the iPhone.

11/1  The five things...

Category: Miscellaneous    By editor at 22:18
The 5 things you didn't know about me. Finally paying my dues.
  • I lived and worked for 8 months in a place with no electricity, no telephone and great selfgrown food. I left this place three times during my stay, two trips to Domodossola to buy basic stuff like coffee, wheat, wine, rice, nails etc. and once to see Love Streams by John Cassvetes and Melvin and Howard by Jonathan Demme on the Piazza Grande.
  • I didn't find the time yet to thank Kyle Barrow properly for the japanese magazines he sent me. I loved the latest Softbank catalogue with Cameron Diaz on the front page. Not only is the catalogue full of QR Codes, but it also shows how much more advanced the japanese are concerning mobile. A beautiful brochure which you want to keep.
  • I just finished to read a great manga from Taniguchi Jiro, Haruka Na Machi He. If you have about the same age as me, you will understand.
  • Mobile is really getting interesting;)
  • I will be at 3GSM, I am now looking for a place to stay. Does anybody know a nice hotel or some other accomodation?

And if I am not coming completely late, I'd like to pass on the torch to NewYorkCityGirl, Smoothplanet, Nicolas Nova, Bruno and Kyle.
But don't feel it as an obligation - only si vous en avez envie.

09/12  Flash Lite 2.0 on my phone, now I need some content

Category: Miscellaneous    By editor at 21:18
Sidhartha wrote that FlashLite 2.1 is now available for free download for both Symbian & Windows Mobile (Mobile Version). As I didn't want to spend 8 dollars on the Flash Lite player earlier (and don't get me wrong, not because of spending the 8 dollars, but for going through the whole payment process), and there wasn't any compelling content which made me choose otherwise, I waited till now. So after reading the above post, I finally started to download the Flash Lite player on my phone. It was still not easy though or to be honest it sucked big time.

First you still have to fill out several pages and to give out a maximum of personal data.

And when you finally want to download the Flash Lite Player to your Symbian phone (in my case a 6670), you are asked the following options:
  • Flash Lite 2.1 Standalone Player for Symbian S60 V3.0
  • Flash Lite 2.1 Standalone Player for Symbian S60 V2.0 FP2
  • Flash Lite 2.1 Standalone Player for Symbian S60 V2.0 FP3
How the hell should I know? Wouldn't it be nice, if I could pick my phone and then get the right Flash Lite Player accordingly?
Finally I guessed the answer - S60 V2.0 FP2 - with the help of Forum Nokia.

But now I have my SIS file on my Mac and I want to transfer it to my blog so that I can download it via mobile (as I am quicker this way than by synching, even if this costs me something for the mobile data transfer). If Adobe would provide me a mobile link from the start, this wouldn't be necessary either.

Anyways, I finally have an installed and working Flash Lite Player on my 6670. Now I only need content. I searched a little bit, but if you have any good ideas what to download, let me know.

PS: Searching for compelling Flash Lite content right now (I am still searching...), I found the S60 "reference web*" site. The Now-New-Near* s60 site can be found here:

04/12  Even mobile natives don't like to type URL's

Category: Miscellaneous    By editor at 00:22
Russell Buckley writes in Mobile Myth Busting
The myth in this case is that it’s hard to input text into a mobile phone. It may well be for you (and it certainly is for me, though my fingers nearly fly over the qwerty keyboard on my Nokia E61). But to anyone who has actually grown up with a phone, that’s simply not the case.
I fully agree here with Russell, the digital natives or should we say the mobile natives are definitely much quicker typing than we are. However, Russell's conclusion:
So if you’re thinking about launching a mobile website, as an example, and you’re agonizing over a URL that’s “easy” to input on the mobile - really, don’t worry. It’s about as important as whether Santa gets gored to death by Rudolf this Christmas.
is quite a different cup of tea. Already in the comments, Riaz pointed out that it's a completely different thing to type an SMS (intrinsic motivation and you decide how long the message will be) then to type in an URL to get to a mobile site (the fact of typing in is a hurdle and out of your control).
On mobile you are also expecting to hopefully find something interesting as changing for something else is not desired.

So I cannot agree with Russell here, typing in URL's and being sure that they are mobile-compatible (for money but also for time reasons) is still one of the biggest hindrances regarding the take off of the mobile web.
There is a solution and it goes like this:
  • QR Codes for easy retrieval of sites
  • Mobilized sites, pages under 30-40KB (i-modes 10KB is a bit strict today) with the exception of 3gp videos.
  • A label or .mobi or anything else that communicates clearly that a site is optimized for mobile devices.
  • Portals or directories of mobile sites
Someone said recently (was it Jan?) that on the web we are looking for the gems in a vast amount of material, whereas on the mobile we are looking for the diamants in the gems. I think that pretty much sums up the difference.

02/11  Mobile Phone Clock Competition?

Category: Miscellaneous    By editor at 23:37
Mobile Art Competition
The above text sounds very babelfishy:
SHIFT holds several competitions aiming to discover fresh creators and support their activities, such as "SHIFT CALENDAR COMPETITION" and "DOTMOV". This time, in collaboration with Crypton Future Media, we start asking for submissions for a mobile phone as "MOBILE ART COMPETITION".
The works will be functioned as a mobile phone clock, and the submissions are available in 2 forms; analog and digital.
The selected works will be broadly distributed within Japan, in a mobile content managed by Crypton Future Media, which can be accessed from an official site of AU and SoftBank. The deadline is on December 20th, 2006.
The result of this competition will be announced in SHIFT 123 issue, launched on 10th of February, 2007
