24/6 The gap between Japan and Europe
| Category: Mobile Market By editor at 12:43 |
The difference between high-end users in Japan and Europe is perhaps less than a year. But on average, there is a gap of about two to three years. Low-end European users still only use voice and SMS, and don’t want to try web access.”It's easy why: no easy access, scarcity of content and price. Japan has neither of these problems.
How can we solve the problem:
- Easy access = QR Codes
- Scarcity of Content = let the creativity of the edges flourish, e.g. use mobile enabled weblogs
- Price = Telecom data prices should come down quickly, as I don't see any other way of long term survival for the telecoms. Voice and SMS are already declining.

I'd be interested to see users from South Korea and the US thrown into that mix. As a US resident, I find it interesting albeit a bit depressing to contemplate the possibilities vs. reality of mobile communications here.

Hi Daniel,
I don't know anybody in South Korea, but I guess it's similar to the japanese situation. The US seems to be still far away what you can already experience in Europe. So I would come to the following schema:
US - lagging behind, as PC/Macs are in widespread use
Europe - somewhere in the middle depending on individual countries
Japan, Korea - leading the mobile web market

interesting article - I don't agree with all the details.
But an article about mobile phones in Japan should at least get the Japanese word for mobile phones right!
Mobile phone is "keitai denwa" - not "ketai denwai" as the article says...

Hi Gerhard,
Would be interesting to know with what you do not agree.

Yeah, your right, Ericsson should do some better proofreading.
I just add the Kanji here:
KEITAI DENWA (携帯電話)
most often shortened to
KEITAI (携帯) or in Katakana ケイタイ
