Since QR code is not very common in Europe yet, ichiba.ch got my attention. The site features such a code at a prominent location. However, my phone just said it can't fetch content for "1". Very disappointing!

It looks like they (you?) used the code as a design element. This is not very clever. If people are to adopt this new technology, *every* code must be useful to them. After a few such failures, they are going to lose interest and confidence pretty soon. So please, don't use QR codes just to make your site look cool.

Chris,
Cool, you did decode it. Our QR Reader can do several things, read encoded numbers or URLs or SMS messages or texts or phone numbers.

So no, it's absolutely no design element!!!;)

In this case "1" is translated to the mobile version of ichiba.ch.

If you go on this post in my blog you see both. In the post a regular website link (with a bit a bigger size) and on the left in the navigation panel a Code which uses numbers. The number itself is also written under the Code (and you could also type it in our Reader).

Both Codes will bring you to http://roger.kaywa.ch/mobile.

Roger,
The QR link in your blog post works perfect. It's just the code on the top right of ichiba.ch that didn't work (I'm using glass on a Nokia N70). Of course, when your reader will be available, I'll give it a try :)
I hope mobile applications of QR in Europe will be better standardized than in Japan, so we don't need to support three "standards" in every QR code as they do..
