21/1  The BBC comes now with QR Codes

QR codes for BBC programmes and some other stuff
We’re on a bit of a roll at the moment with our work on /programmes, so quick on the heals of the work to integrate iPlayer and programme credits onto our episode pages I’m chuffed to announce another batch of new features: QR-Codes, schedules and um calls to inaction.

[...] You can then print QR-Codes on posters, t-shirts, scarfs, whatever. People can then decode them by taking a picture, using specific software installed on their mobile phone, to read and convert the code back to the URL - so they can easily visit the web site.

Anyway - every BBC programme now has a QR code. You can get it by adding …/qrcode to the end of the URL for any programme page. For example, this is the URL for Platoon:
   http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007mcgw

And this is its QR-Code:

   http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007mcgw/qrcode

This is significant boost to the wider introduction of qr codes. Hats off to beeb! With large media owners behind the promotion of an emerging technology it stands great chance of rapid adoption. What suprises me is that there is no mention of it via the bbc website search results.

One thing is the codes for programme listings, but i would like to see the useage onscreen during the broadcast of say a cookery programme: "didn´t catch those ingredients for mousakka... just flash your phone against the tv screen, down there in the corner on that squiggly thing", says celeb chef, and whoosh you get your ingrdients courtesy of an intersital from sainsburys, plus reedemable discount or the like (to top up the license fee of course) - surely an area ripe for investment for the bbc (beats ceefax eh?)

and finally, i am somewhat suprised at the lack of foresight about qr codes from a sizeable amount of mainstream tech commentators in their end of year roundups and trends to note for 2008 - lets revisit the status 12 months from now.

Regarding TV:
We tried with Teletext and it worked fine.

Tech Commenters:
I guess they are still very much focused on the web. Mobile is still a very young and not well understood media.

Hi,

I implemented the QR Code work into the BBC /programmes site. At the moment it a purely client side generation (hence the lack of search results for us), reasons being that we basically discussed adding them to our pages in the morning and implemented it in the afternoon, so it was simple to add.

I have been doing further work to be realised any day which will generate QR Codes as downloadable images, embedding in well marked up pages giving a bit more background information, as well links of where to download readers.

We have had big interest within the whole organisation, so expect a lot more in the future.

If found a good website on QR code. You can generate barcodes, decode them with mobiles, etc. : http://www.jaxo-systems.com
